Iran (northern region)

August 16, 2014

The northwestern region of Iran is more mountainous and known for its quaint mountain villages, which in winter are covered in thick snow. Stretching up to Iraq to the west, and Turkey and Azerbaijan in the northwest, this region also offers access to the southern shores of the Caspian Sea. Tabriz is a nice city with quite a few attractions. Not far from Tabriz is the troglodytic village of Kandovan and halfway down to Tehran, not far from the Caspian Sea is the mountain village of Masuleh. [MORE...]

#48 – Dubai & Burj Khalifa, United Arab Emirates (UAE)

August 15, 2014

Dubai has accelerated exponentially over the past 10 years from a sleepy desert town to a mega desert city with too many skyscrapers to count. While interesting to visit, it's not exactly an appealing place to live. The view from the 124-floor Burj Khalifa is stunning. [MORE...]

Glaciers in all their glory (Photo Essay)

August 14, 2014

Glaciers are truly fascinating and what makes them increasingly special is the obvious evidence that they are disappearing. Actually, they are melting at an alarming rate. In some locations such as in Alaska it is indicated by sign boards how the glaciers have been retreating over the past 30 or 40 years. Among the most impressive glaciers, in terms of size and colour, are those in Alaska and in Argentina’s Patagonia area. Among the largest are the glaciers in Greenland and Iceland. Among the most remote are probably those in Greenland and Pakistan. In Svalbard you can [MORE...]

Bangladesh in sepia (Photo Essay)

August 9, 2014

Bangladesh is blessed with lots of colourful people, architecture, and scenery. However, once the colour is taken away and viewed through a sepia filter, it is easier to see the real Bangladesh behind the colours. While people generally look happy with life, the poverty in which many people live is truly appalling. People work hard to make ends meet. In the Chittagong ship breaking yards, men and boys work long hours to break down massive ships by hand and basic tools – all for a meagre $1 or $3 per day.  While poor, the people are friendly and very hospitable towards foreign [MORE...]

#49 – Architectural Masterpieces, MALTA

August 8, 2014

While Malta's main island appears as a mere dot on a small European map, once you explore it you will find a nation with a great heart. Malta is quaint, charming, and such a delight. From the historical buildings to the turquoise waters which surround the off lying islands, Malta is a gem in the Mediterranean. [MORE...]

South African Wildlife (Photo Essay)

August 4, 2014

The world is big and wide and so much to see. However, one experience remains incredibly special – a day (or night) out with the South African wildlife. These photos were mostly captured in game reserves in northern South Africa, where much of the South African wildlife is concentrated.  The largest national game reserve, the Kruger National Park, is huge and stretches along the Mozambican border all the way up to Zimbabwe. Several smaller national and provincial parks, as well as many private game reserves all cater to wildlife enthusiasts. South Africa is truly a [MORE...]

Paradise at Maldives Islands

August 2, 2014

The Republic of the Maldives, better known as the Maldive Islands, is a chain of twenty-six atolls situated in the Indian Ocean about 700 km (430 mi) southwest of Sri Lanka and 400 km (250 mi) southwest of India’s Kerala State. With a population of about 400,000 people, about 25% live on the small island capital of Malé. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef which normally includes some coral rims and edges. The reef encircles a lagoon partially or completely and there may be coral islands, sandbanks, or cays on the rim of the coral reef. While most people who have seen photos of the [MORE...]

#50 – Red City of Dubrovnik, CROATIA

August 1, 2014

The small city of Dubrovnik along the Adriatic coast of southern Croatia looks more special once you are up in the hills for an eagle eye view. Away from the hordes of tourists, Dubronik from a distance looks so peaceful and as you stare over the city, coastline, and islands, you can't help but to imagine what the city was like 50 or 100 years ago.  [MORE...]
