Polar Bear Spotting in Svalbard

September 3, 2014

Ever dreamt about being on top of the world – geographically speaking? You have a few choices: northern parts of Canada, Greenland, Norway, or Russia. These are the only four countries which will take you close to the top of the world, and thus close to the North Pole. While a North Pole expedition would be the cherry on the cake, many of us can neither afford nor successfully complete such an adventure trip. Getting to the most northern reaches of Canada, Greenland, or Russia will require a substantial amount of money, preparation, and determination. The best option is Norway, and [MORE...]

10 Best ancient ruins of the MIDDLE EAST

September 3, 2014

There are many reasons to travel all over the Middle East (and arguably many reasons not to travel to the Middle East at all), though one of the strongest arguments in favour of travel is to explore the many ancient ruins. With a long history, the Middle East boasts some of the most incredible remnants of ancient civilisations. However, with war constantly raging at various burning points, one can only wonder how long these ruins will still be standing. Among the best ruins are those in Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Jordan, and Turkey. Palmyra, the ancient city in Syria, recently suffered damage [MORE...]

Russia’s “Golden Ring”

September 3, 2014

Russia has much to offer to the intrepid traveller and one of the most rewarding destinations is located to the northeast of Moscow. Referred to as the Golden Ring (Золотóе кольцó), the area is comprised of several historic towns famous for their beautiful golden onion-domed religious buildings. These towns played a significant role in the formation and growth of the Russian Orthodox Church over many years. They have also preserved the memories of some of the most significant events in Russia’s history. Often described as “open-air museums”, the architecture mostly dates [MORE...]

Words & photos by Jenna Kirkby (15), a resident of Darnall Village. Jenna Kirkby On the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, lies an undiscovered gem.  A place where summer greets you with a canopy of red Flamboyant flowers and a sweet breeze.  A place where the hills are covered with sugar-cane blowing back and forth, like an ocean of green his undiscovered beauty is Darnall, a small sugarcane village.  David Brown, one of the first settlers in the area, named it after his hometown in the UK.  Only an hour’s drive from Durban this town has managed to stay “off the [MORE...]

TRAVELLER: Libby Troy, Mudjimba Queensland, Australia

September 3, 2014

[Editor's note]: I met Libby at TravBuddy, an online travel community. She was particularly impressed with the photography in my coffee table books, which she saw at www.globerovers.com. The next time she visited Hong Kong we met up at a coffee shop on Hong Kong's Tsing Yi Island where she literally drooled over my travel pictures (or so at least I saw it, LOL). We had a great chat about everything related to travel. Since then she has become one of my most loyal supporters, editors, and buyers of my books and magazines. She can be found at www.allaboutphotography.com.au where she and Rich Johnston offer photography workshops and tours mainly around Australia. As a born traveler, she also has a trained eye for good photos! [MORE...]

TRAVELLER: Therese O’Brien, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

September 3, 2014

[Editor]: Therese is one of the happiest travellers I have ever come across. She smiles every day from early till late and absolutely takes the perils of solo travelling as it comes. I first met Therese at the Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport upon arrival for my first visit to Iran. I think we both pretended to be brave while we both were a bit worried about what to expect in Iran. Together we exchanged rials for dollars at the exchange window and then decided to share a taxi to town. We ended up travelling together over several days during the following two weeks. While she loves spending a lot of time mingling with the locals, even joining them on picnics and home visits, I'm more into running up the hills to take photos of the stunning landscapes. She's a great travel buddy and in her heart and mind she is travelling the world every single day! She is one of my travel idols! [MORE...]
