Black and white

January 23, 2018

There is something about black and white (B&W) photographs that is really special to me. While I take most photos in colour and then digitally process them, some of my photos are taken in B&W with my new Fujifilm camera. [MORE...]

This article appears in Globerovers December 2017 Somewhere in the world are still a few places where you can travel for days without seeing any fellow travellers! Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is not far north of Australia, though it feels like a world away. Here you will find a world not yet overrun by mass tourism. A place where the sight of a traveller is rare, in particular outside the capital, Dili, and nearby Atauro Island. Timor Leste is one of the world’s newest countries, and unquestionably one of the least explored countries in the world. It is a relatively peaceful [MORE...]

Vintage way of life in Uruguay (Photo Essay)

December 11, 2017

This article appears in Globerovers December 2017 There are two countries that are paradise to lovers of vintage cars. The most well known being Cuba where a large proportion of the cars on the roads are classic cars from the 50’s. Cuba’s “love” for vintage cars was forced on them when President Fidel Castro banned the importation of foreign cars in 1959, and since then the island’s drivers have been stuck with whatever vehicles they owned. Their dependence on what they had was proliferated by trade embargoes imposed mainly by the USA. Cuba’s ban has been relaxed since Fidel [MORE...]

November 15, 2017

This article appears in Globerovers December 2017 At the top of the attractions list is to watch a few local TV stations! All North Korean television stations are propaganda machines, promoting the Worker’s Party position and demonising all things Western. The typical programming includes news (watch out for the famous lady Ri Chu–hee), revolutionary operas, patriotic music, marching bands, army choirs, documentaries about the Worker’s Party, military parades, locally produced movies, and lately a lot of footage showing Marshall Kim Jong-un and his very happy [MORE...]

Thailand Monkey Buffet (Photo Essay)

July 9, 2017

Once a year, on the last Sunday of November, it’s time for the Monkey Buffet in Lopburi, Thailand. Located about 150 km north of the national capital, Bangkok, the history of Lopburi dates back almost 1,000 years. While under control of the Khmer Empire from Angkor (Cambodia), around the 13th century, many temples were constructed here, many of which are still standing today. One of them, built as a Hindu shrine, is Phra Prang Sam Yot. Over the years, hundreds of crab-eating macaques moved in, hence the temple is commonly known as the “Monkey Temple”. These monkeys are cared for by the [MORE...]

Vanuatu – Photos from the Archives (Photo Essay)

June 25, 2017

The archipelago of Vanuatu is located in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia, and surrounded by the islands of New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, and Fiji. Vanuatu is known for its superb diving and snorkelling, tropical islands, volcanoes, beaches, deep-sea fishing, dimly-lit kava bars, and friendly locals. However, dig deeper and you will find interesting rituals such as the bizarre annual land-diving ceremony on Pentecost Island, a religious cult revering the dead US soldier John Frum, as well as another cult who follows England’s Prince Philip. The islands also have a rather dark [MORE...]

Portugal’s Azores Islands (Photo Essay)

May 25, 2017

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, about 1,643 km west of Lisbon, Portugal, some 1,500 km from the African coast and 1,925 km southeast of Canada’s Newfoundland, lie the nine islands of the Azores Archipelago, officially referred to as ‘Portugal’s Autonomous Region of the Azores’ (Região Autónoma dos Açores). Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Azores Archipelago is, very noticeably, of volcanic origin and lies scattered along a 600 km stretch of ocean. Geographically, the islands are divided into three groups, namely the Eastern Group (Santa Maria and São Miguel Islands), [MORE...]

Faces in far away places (Photo Essay)

March 23, 2017

I think the biggest challenge of a travel photographer or travel journalist is to photographically capture the heart of a country – portraits of its people. Over many years I have captured some interesting portraits of many amazing people. Here are a few of my favourite portraits. See more at my NEW BLOG    Wadi Thughra, Petra, JORDAN I was exploring and truly admiring the rock-cut architecture and water conduit systems built during the 5th century BC in the ancient Nabataeans city now known at Petra. As much as I was intrigued but the stone carved city, I was slowly being sucked in [MORE...]
